The Memphis Tennessee North Stake held a Relief Society birthday celebration titled "100 Dresses: If This Dress Could Talk" on March 10, 2009. Four local wards participated: Arlington, Lakeland, Bartlett 1st and Bartlett 2nd.
In honor of the 167th year since the Relief Society was organized, as a charitable project the stake committed to collecting dresses, business suits, slacks and blouses, with the proceeds being donated to two charitable organizations, Dress for Success and Citizens for Community Values.
Dress for Success promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a support network and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.
Citizens for Community Values assists women and their children who desire to leave the sex trade and drug abuse. They learn how to reenter society and the work force – trained for employment, addiction-free and possessing a value system that promotes a healthy lifestyle physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
The stake collected items of clothing over a three-month period and donated approximately 397 business suits, dresses, slacks and blouses, dividing the donations between the two charities.
During the evening's program Carol Wiley, director of victim assistance at Citizens for Community Values, addressed the attendees and shared information about her organization while expressing gratitude for the stake's efforts in helping the women of the Memphis area.
