President Thomas S. Monson

Since the October 2008 general conference, "there have been continuing signs that circumstances in the world aren't necessarily as we would wish." The global economy is in a nosedive, the moral footings of society are slipping and the righteous are sometimes subjected to ridicule and persecution. Wars, natural disasters and personal challenges continue.

"It would be easy to become discouraged and cynical about the future, or even fearful of what might come, if we allowed ourselves to dwell only on that which is wrong in the world and in our lives. Today, however, I would like us to turn our thoughts and our attitudes away from troubles around us and to focus instead on our blessings as members of the church." An attitude of defeat is not of the Lord.

The history of the restored church includes the experiences of many who have struggled and yet remained steadfast and of good cheer. "This attitude is what will pull us through whatever comes our way. It will not remove our troubles from us but will enable us to face our challenges, to meet them head-on and to emerge victorious."
