"Through His divine sacrifice, [Jesus Christ] has provided the way for us to gain eternal life, ..." said Sister Barbara Thompson, second counselor in the Relief Society general presidency, during the Sunday morning session. "He has asked for our assistance in helping one another do the things that will lead to eternal life."
She referred to three things outlined by Sister Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president, during last September's General Relief Society Meeting "to help us in our goal to obtain eternal life."
1. Increase in faith and personal righteousness.
Sister Thompson said that as a child she was taught by her parents principles such as faith, prayer, scripture study, love for God and obedience to His commandments. She was also taught the importance of temple covenants in keeping her on the course to eternal life.
"Each of us must follow these principles throughout our lives to increase our faith and personal righteousness," she said.
2. Strengthen families and homes.
Talking of different family situations, Sister Thompson said, "No matter what our family looks like — each of us can work to strengthen our own families or help in strengthening others."
She pointed out, "Scriptures, family home evening and family prayer will strengthen families and support one another to stay on the right path."
3. Serve the Lord and His children and seek out and care for the poor and needy.
"There are opportunities everywhere to help those in need," Sister Thompson said. "I submit to you that at sometime in our lives each of us will be poor in some way and will need the help of another person."
She illustrated with the example of when wind blew down a neighbor's tree into her yard, cutting power to her house. She said family and Church members rallied to help her remove the debris so the power could be restored. She thanked those willing to be true disciples of Jesus Christ by serving, loving and giving to others.
