Elder Russell M. Nelson and Elder Dallin H. Oaks began their service in the Quorum of the Twelve 25 years ago after they were sustained in April 1984 general conference.
Elder Nelson was ordained April 12, and Elder Oaks was ordained May 3 after completing assignments with the Utah Supreme Court.
An article in the April 15, 1984, Church News stated: "The two new members of the Council of the Twelve, named in general conference April 7, are men of outstanding abilities and accomplishments.
"Dr. Russell M. Nelson, 59, is an internationally respected heart surgeon, and Dr. Dallin H. Oaks, 51, is a Utah State Supreme Court justice and former BYU president."
The brethren filled vacancies that resulted from the deaths of Elder LeGrand Richards and Elder Mark E. Petersen.
Among current apostles, Elder Nelson and Elder Oaks are fourth and fifth in seniority, respectively.
