For the earth is full, and there is enough and to spare; yea, I prepared all things, and have given unto the children of men to be agents unto themselves. — Doctrine and Covenants 104:17
"When we are self-reliant, we will use material blessings we receive from God to take care of ourselves and our families and be in a position to help others," said Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin of the Quorum of the Twelve during the October 1991 general conference.
"Comment on the principle of self-reliance may seem merely to echo the obvious, but it runs counter to the trends in our society that shift responsibility to others. Many Saints have been spared suffering because they have lived by this principle."
