Tabernacle Choir salutes U.S. Air Force in concert

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square performed during an Air Force Week concert in the Tabernacle on Temple Square on Thursday evening, June 4. Titled A Salute to America's Air Force," the performance was a presentation of the Church in conjunction with the Utah Defense Alliance.

The program's repertoire included, "Praise to the Lord," "Hymn of Praise," "Danny Boy," "Cindy," "You'll Never Walk Alone," "When the Saints Go Marchin' In," and "God Bless America."

Elder Robert D. Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles gave welcoming remarks, and several other General Authorities attended the concert.

Also giving remarks was Lt. Col. Greg Thomas, Commander of "The Thunderbirds." Larry Lunt, U.S. Air Force Brigadier General (Ret), and now a counselor in the Salt Lake Temple presidency, offered the invocation on the program.

Gen. Kathy Close, until recently commander of Hill Air Force Base, and Maj. Gen. Brian L. Tarbet, adjutant general of the Utah National Guard, attended.

Mack Wilberg, music director of the Tabernacle Choir, conducted. Lloyd Newell, who is the "voice" of the choir's weekly "Music and the Spoken Word" broadcast, served as the program's announcer.

Only three bases in the United States were selected to host this year's Air Force Week to tell the Air Force's story and the story of its airmen's work and sacrifices. Utah's Hill Air Force Base was one of those selected this year. The choir's concert was one of several events held in conjunction with Air Force Week.
