President Thomas S. Monson sent members of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square on their latest Church mission to seven cities in 13 days.
Prior to the choir's departure on June 18, with the orchestra scheduled to depart June 20, President Monson addressed the singers and musicians in the Tabernacle on June 14 after the weekly Sunday morning broadcast of "Music and the Spoken Word."
"You are going on a mission of the Church; you're going under the direction of men and women who have been selected to be your leaders," President Monson said. "You are going to share the talents with which you have been endowed by God with people who will applaud. For every applause you hear there will be an applause in their hearts for the memory they will have of having heard the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sing."
He quoted from modern-day scripture: "And whoso receiveth you, there I will be also, for I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up" (Doctrine and Covenants 84:88).
"That," said President Monson, "is the blessing I invoke upon you — that the holy angels of God will bear you up."
The choir began its concert tour June 18, performing with the Cincinnati Pops at Riverbend Music Center after having departed Salt Lake City shortly after 6 a.m. that day.
The Orchestra at Temple Square, flying from Salt Lake City, is to join the choir for the remainder of the 2009 summer tour, beginning with a concert in St. Louis, Mo. (Scott Trade Center, June 20), and continuing with concerts in Des Moines, Iowa, (Iowa Events Center, June 22); Omaha, Neb., (Holland Performing Arts, June 23); Kansas City, Mo., (Sprint Center, June 25); Norman, Okla., (University of Oklahoma campus, June 27); and Denver, Colo., (Red Rocks Amphitheater, June 29). The choir and orchestra members are to return to Salt Lake City on June 30.
