Elder Hugh B. Brown, then of the Quorum of the Twelve, delivered an address on various types of fitness during the CBS radio program "Church of the Air," June 14, 1959. His remarks directed toward youth were reprinted in the June 20, 1959, Church News.
The article quoted Elder Brown: "Physical fitness contributes to all other aspects of personal development and makes for rich and radiant living, but strength of character goes deeper than muscular development. We all know there is interrelationship between physical and mental health …
"To be mentally and emotionally fit, one must be informed and growing, alert, aware and in command of himself …
"One's social value depends upon his spiritual quality, not on what he possesses, not upon his knowledge alone."
