During an interview for an article on his birthday last year, the Church News asked President Thomas S. Monson to describe what he would consider the ideal gift that members worldwide could give him. Without a moment's hesitation he said, "Do something for someone else on that day to make his or her life better. Find someone who is having a hard time or is ill or lonely, and do something for them. That's all I would ask."

For an article this year on President Monson's birthday, which is Aug. 21, the Church News would like to report on some of the "gifts of service" from Church members.

We are looking for accounts of members who have reached out to others, particularly one-on-one. If you have "served the one" or if someone has served you, or if you have observed someone serving an individual, please tell us about it.

Have you visited someone "who is having a hard time, or is ill, or lonely"? Have you done something for that person?

If you have been having a hard time, or have been ill or lonely and someone has done something for you, please send us an e-mail.

We hope to publish a report in the issue of Aug. 15. However, since President Monson's birthday is Aug. 21, we plan to publish a follow-up report later. If you do something for someone on Aug. 21 as a "birthday gift to President Monson," please e-mail us.

Upon request, your "gift" can be reported on anonymously.

Please send your e-mails to churchnews@desnews.com. Enter "Gift" in the subject field.
