To celebrate 30 years of broadcasting "Music and the Spoken Word," the Mormon Tabernacle Choir took requests from the public on its repertoire for July 1959 broadcasts.
An article in the July 4, 1959, Church News stated: "While all programs in July will feature request selections and point to the anniversary, the July 19 program specifically will be directed to the date of the first broadcast on July 15, 1939."
A "flood" of requests was received with "Come, Come Ye Saints" leading the way. "The next two selections receiving the highest number of requests were 'Hallelujah Chorus' and 'A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.'?"
The July 19 broadcast drew messages of congratulations from President David O. McKay, Philadelphia Orchestra director Eugene Ormondy and Utah Gov. George D. Clyde.
