The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square were honored by the Latter-day Saint Booksellers Association on Thursday evening, Aug. 6. The combined ensemble was awarded the Listener's Choice Award as Group of the Year for the album "Praise to the Man."

The Choir and Orchestra were further saluted with the Listener's Choice Award Album of the Year for "Called to Serve."

Scott Barrick, general manager of the choir and orchestra, received the award on behalf of the groups at an evening gala hosted by the LDSBA as part of its annual convention in Salt Lake City. "We are particularly gratified to receive these two awards from our friends at LDSBA who know us best and who are among our most ardent supporters," said Barrick of the awards. "We are most appreciative of the fine work they do in helping to get these wonderful recordings in the hands of our listeners throughout the country and around the world."

The LDS Booksellers Association is a non-profit organization comprised of retail and wholesale businesses that deal primarily in LDS books and related products. With a current membership is in excess of 180 retailers and 180 wholesalers, LDSBA members are located in the United States and Canada, and also extend into Europe and Australia. During the month of August each year, it sponsors a convention and trade show in Salt Lake City where members have a chance to exhibit current and upcoming products, attend training and network with other LDSBA members.

Both of the CDs recognized with awards by the LDSBA have themes that resonate with LDS audiences. "Called to Serve" celebrates the spirit of missionary work, a theme that also appeals to a broader segment of believers who desire to share the love of God with others. It includes such well-known songs as "Called to Serve," "I'll Go Where You Want Me to Go," and "High on the Mountain Top."

"Praise to the Man" is perhaps the most uniquely "Mormon" CD released by the choir and orchestra. The album features 12 songs that honor the memory and work of Joseph Smith. LDS hymns and songs arranged by Mack Wilberg, Sam Cardon, Nathan Hofheins and Tabernacle organist Richard Elliott such as "The Morning Breaks," "Praise to the Man," and "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief" are included.
