LUND, SWEDEN

Missionaries serving in Lund, Sweden, organized a Helping Hands project to weed and beautify a Jewish cemetery. The aim of such activities is to build friendly relations with the Jewish community.

Under the direction of senior missionaries, the local missionaries in Lund, Sweden, organized a Mormon Helping Hands project to clean the local Jewish cemetery.

Mark Paredes, a high councilor in the Santa Monica California Stake who also has long-term professional experience in Jewish issues, had been in Sweden during the spring and spoke regarding Jewish-Mormon relationships. Lund is north of Malm? a southern coastal city.

His talk prompted the full-time missionaries and young single adults to contact the Jewish community. After several visits, the missionaries, under the direction of Elder Knut Rade and Sister Hildegard Rade, received permission to serve in the Jewish cemetery and clear away weeds. The Lord blessed them with excellent weather as they worked on June 30 and July 28.

Among things they learned were why Jews lay stones on gravestones and the meaning of some Hebrew inscriptions. Missionaries had opportunity to speak of their missions and were asked about their acts of service and what they planned following their missions.

The goal is to make the cemetery project an ongoing activity that includes more local young single adults to continue building a friendly relationship with the Jewish community. Elder Rade said he and his wife are planning to visit the synagogue soon for an informal evening of kosher food and Israeli folk dancing.
