Waiting in line for the Sunday afternoon session of conference, Richard and Pam Norby huddled under an umbrella, shielding them from the cold October rain. In a line that wound its way along others in the Conference Center plaza, the couple from Lehi, Utah, acknowledged watching conference on television or listening to it on the radio would be much easier. However, Brother Norby said the spirit at the conference center is incomparable, making the experience much more meaningful than simply hearing the talks from the couch. And not content to just listen at the Conference Center, the Norbys spend the days and weeks before conference readying themselves to hear from prophets and apostles.

"We do more than just attend," Brother Norby said, citing personal prayer, scripture study and reading past conference talks as some ways they prepare themselves, as well as praying for the speakers who will deliver addresses. During conference, the Norbys are engaged, too.

"We come to find answers to questions," Sister Norby said. The answers they seek are usually in relation to their callings. Brother Norby, for example, is president of the Orem Utah College 1st Stake, a student stake, so he looks for ways to better train new bishops and care for the members of his stake.

Because of his calling, the Norbys don't often get to attend church with each other. Usually, Brother Norby will attend meetings in the student stake while Sister Norby goes to their regular ward, the North Lake 2nd Ward, Lehi Utah South Stake. The opportunity to attend meetings together is another reason why conference weekend is special, Sister Norby said.

"This has been great for two days to spend time together," she said. The couple attended all four general sessions in the Conference Center; Sister Norby was able to procure tickets through her position on the Relief Society general board. She said her favorite part about attending conference in the Conference Center is being surrounded by thousands of other faithful members of the Church, as well as seeing the prophet and apostles.

"The Spirit testifies again that he is the prophet," she said.

Brother Norby said he also enjoys being surrounded by other members and said he feels the unity that comes during conference.

"It's a common cause," he said. This feeling of singularity in cause and the inspiring messages make him want to go beyond simply hearing the words and testimonies of the leaders of the Church, but also makes him want to go home and do something, to be a little better afterward.

Although conference is now over, the Norbys say they'll remember the messages for a long time.

"It's inspiring," Brother Norby said. "We feed off it for a long, long time."
