The Dallas Texas Temple was dedicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley, then second counselor in the First Presidency, in 23 sessions Oct. 19-24, it was reported in the Oct. 28, 1984, edition of the Church News.
Other General Authorities who participated in selected sessions of the dedication were President Thomas S. Monson, then a member of the Quorum of the Twelve; President Ezra Taft Benson, then president of the Quorum of the Twelve; Elder Neal A. Maxwell, Elder David B. Haight and Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve; and Elder Robert D. Hales, then a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy.
The article stated: "In the first session, President Hinckley recalled the bitter cold day in January 1983 at the temple groundbreaking. 'There was a cold attitude in this community toward us. Our prayer offered was that the animosity experienced here would soften.
" 'That attitude is changing. Those who live in this community will all speak with pride and regard it (the temple) as a great asset. The spirit that emanates from this building will bless them and the whole area. I'm confident of that,' he said.
"He admonished the congregation to come to the temple often, 'to contemplate and reflect on what you hear and it will be a refining influence in your lives.' "
