"These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." — John 16:33
I was speaking with a friend who recently lost a loved one. The brief conversation we shared brought back several tender feelings for me as I remembered the struggle of coping with the sudden passing of my mother. At the time I was 14 and still working to develop my own testimony of the gospel.
I realized that I needed to develop my own witness to find the peace so often spoken of by others. I started studying the scriptures and prayed with a fervent intent to find this peace amidst the pain I was experiencing. After some time, I read the following words of the Savior as found in the gospel of John, "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."
This scripture became the foundation of my personal gospel testimony. I realized that God exists and He knows and loves me and each of His children personally. I began to comprehend the significance of the Atonement in my life; by coming unto Christ and applying the Atonement I could conquer the pain I felt this day. I would be able to find the peace He wanted me to enjoy in this life.
Life is full of obstacles and challenges, but this scripture is a constant reminder to me that I have a loving and knowing Heavenly Father who looks after me — who looks after each one of us. He has prepared a way whereby we can find peace in Him.
