Elder McConkie served as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve from October 1972 until his death from cancer. He was born July 29, 1915.

The Church News report stated: "Several funeral speakers mentioned how Elder McConkie, in the final days of his illness, had rallied from his sickbed to deliver in the 155th Annual General Conference April 6 his final address — a powerful, stirring testimony of the atoning sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ."

Elder McConkie wrote the text for the hymn "I Believe in Christ," which was sung at his funeral by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

A respected writer, Elder McConkie authored books that, according to the article, include a set of six volumes [of] The Messiah, a three-volume Doctrinal New Testament Commentary and the encyclopedic reference, Mormon Doctrine. He also edited a three-volume set of the teachings of Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation.

Elder McConkie was sustained to the First Council of the Seventy on Oct. 6, 1946, at age 31.
