Each month, the Church News will publish a message to complement the Relief Society visiting teaching message found in the Ensign magazine. The following article is based on the May 2010 theme, which is centered on the messages taught in the Church's 180th Annual General Conference.
At age 8, Rosario Sanchez was shown a picture of the Salt Lake Temple by the missionaries who were teaching her family the gospel. After seeing the photo of the beautiful building, she made it a goal to travel to Salt Lake City to see the temple in person.
More than two decades later, Sister Sanchez and her husband, Gabriel Jeronimo, and three children traveled from Oaxaca, Mexico, to Utah to see the temple and hear the words of the prophet and apostles in the Conference Center.
"It was wonderful," Sister Jeronimo said of attending conference. "Since I was a little girl, it was always my dream to come to general conference."
Sister Jeronimo and her husband had been planning the trip for about a year.
"We had been counting the days off for when we would be here and listen to the prophet and apostles," Brother Jeronimo said. "It is very special to see everyone together, in person."
Although it was Sister Jeronimo's dream to attend conference, she said it was even sweeter to have her husband and children with her when she saw the Salt Lake Temple and entered the Conference Center for the first time. During their visit to Utah, the couple, who are both returned missionaries, attended the temple and Brother Jeronimo's mission reunion.
The couple's oldest daughter, Denizli, 12, said that it was very special to be in the same room with the prophet. "I can't believe it," she said. "I will remember forever. I was in general conference, and I listened to the prophet."
The Jeronimos' niece, Rachel Alvarado, 12, who lives in Kearns, Utah, said she will never forget sharing the conference experience with her family.
"I'm with my family that has come from another part of the world," she said. "I can't see them everyday, and it was neat to be with my family in the Conference Center. Just listening to conference and knowing they are here listening with me was neat."
Although the couple's youngest child, Gabriel, wasn't feeling well and didn't attend general conference with his family, Brother Jeronimo, who serves as first counselor in the Oaxaca Mexico Amapolas Stake presidency, said he hopes his children will remember this trip for years to come.
"I hope it helps them strengthen their testimony and that they can share it with other Church members in Mexico," said Brother Jeronimo. "I hope one day to come back to another conference."
