Greetings have poured in to President Thomas S. Monson's office in honor of his 83rd birthday on Aug. 21.

Since it isn't possible for him to personally respond to each one, President Monson has asked the Church News to help him express his gratitude to all those around the world who took the time to prepare and send cards, letters and other forms of birthday greetings.

In 2008, President Monson described to the Church News his ideal birthday present: "Do something for someone else on that day to make his or her life better. Find someone who is having a hard time, or is ill, or lonely, and do something for them."

Robert and Elizabeth Burnett of the La Grange Ward, Crestwood Kentucky Stake, and their children, Meredith, 9, Carson, 2, and Isaac, 3 months, told how they fulfilled this wish.

"We decided to try to do a little service every day. Every night, we share our stories of service and reward them with a small monetary amount in our 'Service Jar.' It has been amazing to watch our jars fill up.

"After the most recent general conference, we decided to donate half of the money to the temple fund and half to the Perpetual Education Fund. This yearlong project has been a testimony builder for our daughter and has given us a tangible way to view our service to others. Happy Birthday, President Monson."
