KYIV, UKRAINE
Arriving in Kyiv Saturday afternoon, Aug. 28, President Thomas S. Monson
expressed admiration for Latter-day Saints who “have been through so much”
in this part of the world.
The Church leader is in this former Soviet bloc nation to dedicate the Kyiv
Ukraine Temple on Sunday morning. As part of the activities held in
conjunction with the dedication, President Monson addressed and attended a
cultural program Saturday evening in the Palace Ukraine Concert Hall. It
was the second time a Church president has delivered an address from the
concert hall; President Gordon B. Hinckley addressed Mormons, their
friends, relatives and others from the venue during a visit in September
2002.

President Monson’s personable manner was evident from the moment he stepped
onto the concert hall’s huge stage. He drew applause as he paused to play
the hall’s grand piano, and thrilled members of the Kyiv Ukraine Stake’s
choir when he walked around the piano bench and music stands to shake hands
with one of the youth.

He addressed the audience, saying, in part, that the Kyiv Ukraine Temple
was the reason for the great celebration that brought together performers
from throughout the temple district. “I have attended many cultural
celebrations held in conjunction with temple dedications. I have loved all
of them,” he said.

The program included adults as well as youth. “The Church is only 20 years
old here,” said Katerina Serdiuk who served as one of the leaders of the
event. “We do not have enough young people to stage a cultural program
themselves, so we included all ages. “Since we are only 20 years old, I say
all is members are young in the gospel.”

Participants came from throughout the temple district Armenia, Belarus,
Bulgaria, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Romania, Russia and Ukraine.
Through music and dance the history of the temple district was told from
ancient times when, according to legend, the apostle Andrew came to what is
now Ukraine, to the present day when a temple now stands on Ukrainian soil.
The unity brought by the gospel of Jesus Christ is reflected in the way all
nations are blessed through temples.
