A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck about 20 miles (30 km) northwest of Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island early Saturday morning at 4:35 a.m. causing extensive damage. The Church is assessing the needs of those impacted by the quake. In response to news media inquiries regarding the well-being of Latter-day Saint missionaries, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has confirmed that all missionaries in the area are safe and accounted for.
