Students and employees race to Idaho Falls in annual relay

REXBURG, Idaho — Approximately 400 students and employees will compete in a 37-mile relay Saturday morning, Sept. 18, as they run from Rexburg to Idaho Falls in the second annual Temple-to-Temple Relay.
"The relay is an event many people have looked forward to all year," said Doug Stutz, an adviser in the activities program. "In addition to the fitness aspect of the event, the social aspect is really great. We hope everyone will have a lot of fun while they develop healthy habits for the future."
Each of the 58 registered teams will begin at the LDS meetinghouse directly west of the Rexburg Idaho Temple in a staggered start. The team with the slowest projected time — according to 5k times turned in at registration — will begin at 7:10 a.m. The fastest team will begin at 8:30 a.m.
Participants are split into several categories, including eight-person, four-person and two-person teams, competing in male, female and mixed divisions. A standard team consists of eight people, who will run stretches varying from 2.7 to 7.2 miles. Two-person teams will split the race into 17.5- and 19.5-mile legs.
"The race is geared primarily toward larger teams, but we wanted to give an opportunity for people to run longer if they want to," Stutz said. He added that the number-one priority during the race will be safety. The running path will be lined with orange cones, safety crews and 15 hydration stations.
"As we ensure participants' safety, we can concentrate more on having fun. We are looking forward to our biggest relay yet."
