A new set of four DVDs containing more than 300 visual resources pertaining to the Doctrine and Covenants and Church history is now available for purchase at the Church Distribution Center. Videos, charts, quotations, paintings and learning activities are all included on discs 1 and 2 of "Doctrine and Covenants and Church History Visual Resource DVDs."

Disc 3 contains five additional movies, including the famous "Joseph Smith: The Prophet of the Restoration," which has been shown since Dec. 17, 2005, on the giant screen of the Legacy Theater in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City and other locations such as Church visitors centers.

More than 300 visual resources and five longer movies are on new DVD set.

The other four movies on that disc are these:

"Legacy," the Church history drama that was the inaugural offering at the Legacy Theater when it opened in 1993.

"Only a Stonecutter," which depicts the story of John Moyle, the handcart pioneer who worked as a stonemason in the construction of the Salt Lake Temple, walking the 22 miles to the job site from his home in Alpine, Utah, even after an accident caused him to lose his leg.

"The Mountain of the Lord," a 1993 Church-produced movie dramatizing President Wilford Woodruff's account to a New York journalist of the construction of the Salt Lake Temple.

"Treasure in Heaven: The John Tanner Story," a 2009 production about Brother Tanner, a wealthy New York landowner who in 1834 sold his property to assist the Church, freely giving all he had to support the kingdom of God.

Disc 4 contains the still pictures and narrated text from the book "Doctrine and Covenants Stories" 1983 edition.

The new DVD set is the second in a series begun a year ago with the release of "Old Testament Visual Resource DVDs." As with the previous product, it is a joint project from the Church departments of Curriculum and Seminaries and Institutes. Its purpose is to combine existing and re-purposed visual resources (videos, quotations, charts, images) into a single product that can enhance the teaching and learning of principles and doctrines from the Doctrine and Covenants and Church history and homes and classrooms.

It follows the pattern of last year's product in that users will see an on-screen index where they can select individual scripture blocks with associated learning resources.

For example, selecting Doctrine and Covenants Sections 1-5 presents the user with a menu of options: three videos called "Watchman on the Tower," "Seek the Lord," and "The Work of God," a clip of a general conference sermon of April 2008 by President Henry B. Eyring, first counselor in the First Presidency, on "the True and Living Church"; another conference sermon clip from October 2002 by Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve on "Missionaries to Match Our Message"; and a written quotation from the late Elder Neal A. Maxwell of the Quorum of the Twelve on "The Foreknowledge of God."

Interactive charts are also included. For example, Doctrine and Covenants Section 7 is illustrated with a chart giving characteristics of translated beings as taught in 3 Nephi 28:7-9.

Paintings depict events in the Restoration of the Church and the life of the Prophet Joseph Smith as well as later events in Church history.

Seminaries and institutes in the Church are using the product in English now and will use it in Spanish and Portuguese beginning in January. Members may use the product for teaching in their homes as it becomes available in their language. Sunday School gospel doctrine teachers will use it in 2013 with the associated course of study for that year.

The product is available for $4.50 from the Church Distribution Center, item number 08042.
