In actuality, the upgraded website has been accessible in a beta version for several months at new.lds.org (see Sept. 17 Church News), but the old address will be switched to point to the new site.

Meanwhile, the old lds.org will still be available at classic.lds.org for people who want to access old content that is not yet part of the new lds.org, said Lee Gibbons, director of lds.org

Here are some highlights from the new site:

New online study tools allow users to annotate and highlight passages in the scriptures, Church magazines and manuals and general conference talks. With a secure log-in identity, an individual user can store his marks and even journal entries under a "My Study Notebook" function. In the future, the "My Study Notebook" will be synchronized for use with mobile Internet devices.

A section called "Prophets and Apostles Speak Today" includes recent and classic messages from Church leaders. It is being enhanced as the new website becomes the official one.

The newly upgraded Church website features a design meant to facilitate members' ability to learn, live and share the gospel. Beginning Nov. 30, the old lds.org address will be switched to point to the new site.

A "Church News and Events" section brings together headlines from and links to each of the Church's official news sources — Public Affairs Newsroom, Church magazines, Mormon Channel, and the Church News. This replaces the current "Around the Church" site on lds.org.

Text, audio and video content from the Worldwide Leadership Training broadcast held Nov. 13 will be on the new website in 40 languages. The broadcast introduced the Church's new administrative handbooks. Handbook 2 is online in English; Handbook 1 will also be online, accessible by bishops and stake presidents.

Existing bookmarks and links to lds.org will be redirected to the new web pages.

A main menu is organized into five sections: Our Heavenly Father's Plan, Family, The Church, Service and Study.

The new website will continue to be enhanced with new content. For now, in addition to English, the site is available, initially, in Spanish and German. Over the next several months, it will be released in eight additional languages: Portuguese, French, Italian, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Developers emphasize that the new site is designed to help Church members learn, live and share the restored gospel and that it will be a key communication channel that emphasizes the prophetic voice. It also encourages members to share the Church's message with others.

The main menu is organized into five sections: "Our Heavenly Father's Plan," "Family," "The Church," "Service" and "Study." A new leaders' site for bishops and stake presidents will help streamline their administrative functions.
