As you think back about legendary teams at BYU, the number one ranked 1983 baseball team rises to the top. To take the Western Athletic Conference Championship, BYU beat San Diego 10-7 in front of the largest home crowd on record, 4,664 fans. BYU racked up a 54-11 overall record for the season.
On April 19, 2003, some members of the old 1983 team held a reunion at BYU to sign autographs and meet with fans. The video below details the events of the reunion. But what happened to the members of the original team? Scott Nielsen was pitcher for the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, and New York Mets from 1986-89. Wally Joyner played first base for the Atlanta Braves, San Diego Padres, California Angels and Kansas City Royals from 1986-2001. Gary Cooper played third base for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros in 1991. Cory Snyder's career included time with the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox and Toronto Blue Jays from 1986-1994. Rick Aguilera was pitcher for the Chicago Cubs, Minnesota Twins and New York Mets from 1985-2000. Colby Ward (was a pitcher for the Cleveland Indians in1990. In addition to the former major leaguers, other notable members of the 1983 team are Steve Eager, a Dallas, Texas, television news anchor, orthodontist Mike Willes in Carlsbad, Calif., dentist Mark Beavers in Kailua, Hawaii, and attorney Nate Hyde who works for Albertson's grocery store chain.
