The First Presidency has announced the dates for the open house, cultural celebration and rededication of the Atlanta Georgia Temple.

The Atlanta Georgia Temple, which will be rededicated May 1, was originally dedicated June 1, 1983.

The public open house will begin Saturday, April 9, and will continue every day through Saturday, April 23, except Sundays. The cultural celebration will be held Saturday, April 30. The temple will be rededicated Sunday, May 1, in two sessions and will open for ordinances Tuesday, May 3.

The temple, which closed for remodeling July 1, 2009, was originally dedicated June 1, 1983, by President Gordon B. Hinckley. It serves members living in 13 stakes in Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee.

Early efforts of missionary work for the Church began in Georgia in 1843. A branch was organized in Haywood, Ga., in 1876. However, until the end of the 19th century, groups of Church members from the South continued to migrate westward.

In 1908, a branch was organized and a meetinghouse constructed in Atlanta. It was replaced in 1915 with a larger building. A new meetinghouse was erected in 1925. Twelve years later, in 1937, the Georgia District of the Church was organized. On May 5, 1957, Elder Mark E. Petersen and Elder LeGrand Richards of the Twelve organized the first stake in Georgia, the Atlanta Stake.

Today there are more than 76,000 members, three missions and 15 stakes in Georgia.
