Waiting outside to enter the Conference Center on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 2, the Cordova family of the Charter Oak Ward, La Verne California Stake, anticipated their first live session of general conference.

Andrea Cordova wanted to "inhale the whole experience." Her husband, Lance, and their son Aaron, 11, looked forward to hear the words of President Monson. Even 4-year-old Ethan said his favorite song is "Follow the Prophet," and Brandon, 8, looked forward to the talks and prayers. They were just happy to be there.

The drive to Utah was not without its challenges. The Cordovas' car was not ready on time and the family had a late start from California. They encountered much traffic, arrived late and missed listening to the morning session but they were smiling as they waited to attend that afternoon's session of the 181st Semiannual General Conference.

"We are hoping that it will go into their hearts," Sister Cordova said as she thought of what she wanted her boys to learn.

"I hope that it makes them feel good inside," Brother Cordova said. He commented that it was nice to see so many members in attendance. In California, he said, sometimes the children feel like they are alone in their faith; but seeing the thousands of members helped them to realize that they are not alone.

"I hope they feel the Spirit and I hope it builds their testimonies." Brother Cordova also hopes conference will motivate Aaron as he plans to serve a mission.

"Seeing the prophet it is like, wow," Aaron exclaimed. "It is like meeting a celebrity. The man who communicates with God, it is really interesting and seeing him talk in person it is more of a joy to be here."

Although Sister Cordova and Ethan ended up watching from a separate viewing area, they all enjoyed conference and the Spirit that they felt when they toured Temple Square after conference.

"To be able to walk around and learn about the Prophet Joseph Smith and all those who trod all the way to Salt Lake, it is very moving," Sister Cordova said. "It is hard not to feel the Spirit." — Caresa Alexander
