Steadfast faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will anchor individuals to the rock of the Redeemer and His matchless power to save, Elder Marcus B. Nash of the Seventy said during the Sunday afternoon session of general conference.
"Our mortal journey is a steep and difficult climb, one that requires our Heavenly Father's help to successfully complete," he declared. "For this reason, He established the principles and ordinances of the gospel to bring us unto the Savior and His saving power."
It is through faith — the first principle of the gospel — that individuals are able to securely attach to the rock of the Redeemer and safely climb the gospel path, overcoming every challenge of mortality and returning to the majestic presence of Heavenly Father.
"Faith is both a principle of action and of power. ... Faith brings us the power of the Lord, which — among other things — is manifested by a hope of good things to come, miracles that confirm our faith and a divine protection in spiritual and temporal matters."
Drawing from the story of Ann Rowley, a pioneer woman and widow from England who was a member of the Martin Handcart Company, Elder Nash shared her example of exercising faith during a trial that led to hope and miracles to feed her family with just two biscuits left over from their sea voyage.
"We too can exercise such faith in the Lord, believing and trusting that our kind and constant God will bless us with His miraculous power suited to our circumstance, according to His timing," he said. "As we do so, we too will see the hand of God manifest in our lives."
Although Satan tries to use such things as doubt, fear or sin to tempt individuals to let go of faith and lose the protection it offers, it is through exercising faith and an examination of the challenges that individuals are able to recognize and heed not the adversary's temptations.
"Rather than focus upon and fear the boisterous wind and waves in our lives, the Lord invites us to, 'Look unto me in every thought, doubt not, fear not.'"
Sin diminishes the presence of the Spirit in a person's life, causing him or her to lack the spiritual stamina to hold on. It is through the Atonement that purification and healing come, fulfilling the Lord's promise to work with individuals to overcome every challenge.
"Steadfast faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will ... anchor you and your loved ones to the rock of our Redeemer and His matchless power to save."
