As sunshine began to seep through a persistent and dreary drizzle on Nov. 1, the people of Central America began to sort through an endless vista of mud.

New mission presidents
Four new mission presidents have been called by the First Presidency. The mission presidents and their wives will begin their service about July 1. The new mission presidents and their assignments are:
- Pedro N. Cardona, 46, Colombia Bogota North Mission; Niquia Ward, Medellin Colombia Stake; stake president; former stake president's counselor, and branch president and counselor; professional salesman; born in Yali, Colombia, to Pedro Nell and Maria Teresa Zuluaga Cardona; married Maria Garcia, four children. She is a Relief Society teacher; former Relief Society president and counselor, and Young Women president; born in La Merced, Colombia, to Juan DeDios and Maria Dolores Echeverry Garcia.Published: Saturday, April 26, 1997 -
Church to create eight new missions
The First Presidency has announced plans to create eight new missions - four in the United States and four abroad - effective about the first of July.
The four new missions in the United States are the California San Francisco, Illinois Chicago South, Nevada Las Vegas West and Texas Houston South missions. The other four are the Chile Santiago East, Honduras Comayaguela, Russia Moscow South and Uruguay Montevideo West missions.Published: Saturday, March 1, 1997
