    The stage was set for New York's role in the Restoration when Joseph and Lucy Mack Smith moved from Vermont to the Palmyra-Manchester area in 1816. Their son Joseph, dismayed by the competing claims of revivalist preachers, sought divine direction in the spring of 1820 and experienced the First Vision in the Sacred Grove on the Smith farm.
