Missionary work in the Southern States began as early as 1831. The first member of the Church in South Carolina is believed to have been Emmanual Masters Murphy who was baptized in Tennessee in 1836. When Lysander M. Davis arrived in South Carolina about 1 November 1839, he found the Murphys had people prepared for baptism. Seven of these were baptized.Published: Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010
