Madagascar, previously known as Malagasy Republic, became independent from France on 26 June 1960. It is in the Indian Ocean east of Mozambique and is the world's fourth largest island. A country on the southeast coast of Africa, Mozambique covers 309,496 square miles. Almost all are Africans and speak one of the Bantu languages, though the country's official language is Portuguese.
