At a conference in Amherst, Ohio, in January 1832, Samuel H. Smith and Orson Hyde were called to serve missions in the northeastern United States. The two reached Boston in June and within a month had baptized seven and were preaching in nearby Lynn. By the time they returned to Kirtland at the end of 1832, there were branches in Boston and New Rowley.
