The pioneer mercantile ventures were well known because they were successful. While other types of financial institutions faltered, the Brigham City Cooperative, for example, weathered the financial storms of the 1860s and went on to form a woolen mill, tannery, hat factory, lumber mills, a dairy, agricultural and carpenter's departments.
