Messages of inspiration from President Hinckley

Excerpts from recent addresses by President Gordon B. Hinckley.BLESSING OF CONVERTS

Every time you bring a convert into this Church you bless a life. Not one life, if he or she remains faithful, but many lives. For that which you do becomes the work of generations yet to come. All of us here are the fruits of missionary work - our fathers, our grandfathers, our great-grandfathers - who accepted the testimony of missionaries and came into the Church. We are the beneficiaries. I never look at missionaries that I do not feel inclined to say, you never can foretell the consequences of that which you do in this service. - From Hong Kong Mission Conference, May 25, 1996.

BLESSING OF PRIESTHOOD

What a marvelous blessing that every man who holds the Melchizedek Priesthood can lay his hands upon the heads of his wife and his children when they need a blessing. And to the women who are here, I wish to say this, great is your blessing in the priesthood which your husbands hold. Every man who lives and honors the priesthood will be a better husband, will be a better father, will be a better man. How wonderful that in the restoration of the work of the Lord one of the great purposes was that every man might speak in the name of God the Lord, even the Savior of the world. - From Pusan Korea Fireside, May 21, 1996

FAMILY PRAYER

Let every family in this Church have prayer together. Now it is important to love individual prayer, but it is a wonderful thing to have family prayer. Pray to your Father in Heaven in faith. Pray in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. You can do nothing better for your children than to have them taking their turn in the family prayer, expressing gratitude for their blessings. If they do that while they are young they will grow with a spirit of thanksgiving in their hearts. - From member fireside, Naha Okinawa Stake and Okinawa Military District, May 20, 1996.

GRATITUDE OF ANCESTORS

I am satisfied that those beyond are aware of what goes on here. And I think the Prophet Joseph must have tears in his eyes, tears of gratitude and love and appreciation as he sees you and the other missionaries in these far reaches of the earth. - From Philippines Cebu Missionary Meeting, June 1, 1996

INVESTIGATORS

There may be some here tonight who are not members of the Church with whom the missionaries are working. I want to make a promise to you that if you will study, if you will learn the doctrines of this Church, if you will resolve within your hearts to serve as you ought to serve as members of this Church, if you will enter the waters of baptism and become confirmed members of the Church, your lives will be richer and happier. - From member fireside, Seoul Korea May 22, 1996.

MISSIONARY GOAL

What we are after are men and women with faith, who will rear families of faith, who will have grandchildren of faith, who will have great-grandchildren of faith and thus build the kingdom of God. - From Taipei Taiwan Mission Conference, May 24, 1996

OTHER FAITHS

We recognize the good in all people. We recognize the good in all churches, in their efforts to improve mankind and to teach principles that lead to good, stable, productive living. To people everywhere we simply say, "You bring with you all the good that you have and let us add to it. That is the principle on which we work." - From Interview by Philippines Television, April 30, 1996.

RECOGNITION OF CHURCH

We are coming to be recognized across the world for what we are: teachers of righteousness, teachers of truth, teachers of peace, teachers of goodness, teachers of salvation to the people of the world. How marvelous it is! - From missionary meeting, Japan Tokyo North and South Missions and Japan Sendai Mission, May 18, 1996.

SACRED RESPONSIBILITY

What a responsibility we have. The whole fate of the world depends on us, according to the revelations of the Almighty. We cannot waste time. We cannot be unrighteous in our living. We cannot let our thoughts dwell on immoral things. We have to be the very best that we can be, you and I, because the very relationship of God our Eternal Father to His children on the earth depends on their accepting what we have come to teach according to His magnificent word. - From Taipei Taiwan Mission Conference, May 24, 1996

SHARE THE GOSPEL

In behalf of the missionaries who are here, I want to plead with the Saints to do all that you possibly can to provide referrals whom they might teach. You will be happy if you do so. Everyone that you see come into the Church because of your effort will bring happiness into your lives. I make that as a promise to each of you. - From Pusan Korea Fireside, May 21, 1996

SOLUTION FOR POVERTY

I have wept as I have seen the poverty and the suffering of the people in this part of the earth. My heart reaches out to them. I do not know what the solution is, except the gospel of Jesus Christ. I think it is the only thing that will help them and bless their lives. If they, even living in poverty and misery, can look to God with hope and faith it will sustain them in their hours of sorrow. Furthermore, I believe with all my heart that if they will accept the gospel and live it, pay their tithes and offerings, even though those be meager, the Lord will keep His ancient promise in their behalf, and they will have rice in their bowls, and clothing on their backs, and shelter over their heads. I do not see any solution. They need a power greater than any earthly power to lift them and help them. - From Philippines Cebu Missionary Meeting, June 1, 1996

WORK MOVING FORWARD

The work of the Lord is moving on. It is moving because of the faith of the people. The Savior gave us a mandate to teach the gospel to every nation, kindred, tongue and people. We are now established in 155 nations and wherever we go there are great and good leaders who hold the priesthood, women of great faith and capacity, young people who sing like angels in choirs, people who pray, people who live the Word of Wisdom, people who pay their tithing, people who have in their hearts a testimony of the divinity of this work. - From general session, Osaka Japan Regional Conference, May 19, 1996.
