Rex Austin Skidmore, 83, chairman of the committee that developed the Teacher Development Program for the Church, died at his home in Salt Lake City Jan. 10, 1998.
A member of the Monument Park 3rd Ward, Salt Lake Foothill Stake, he had served as a regional representative, stake president and high councilor. During 1981-82, he and his wife, Knell, served as special representatives for the International Mission in the Holy Land. He had been a Salt Lake Temple sealer since 1985.He was a professor in the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Utah and served as dean for 20 years.
Joseph Earl Jones, 79, former managing director of Church Security, died in Salt Lake City Jan. 8, 1998.
A member of the Butler 7th Ward, Salt Lake Butler West Stake, he had been a member of the Church VIP hosting group and had served as a missionary and branch president in Thailand.
He was a chief of police in Salt Lake City and had a distinguished career as a U.S. Army lieutenant colonel that included directing a program that trained more than 20,000 village safety officers who controlled the border of Thailand, Laos and Cambodia during the Vietnam War. He was appointed an officer in the Most Noble Order of the Royal Crown of Thailand by the king of that nation.
