This week in Church history

President J. Reuben Clark Jr., first counselor in the First Presidency, was honored May 5, 1950, by friends with whom he had grown up in Tooele County.

Among those who paid tribute to President Clark at the banquet was the only living ex-U.S. President Herbert Hoover, who sent a letter to be read at the event.

The May 14, 1950, Church News quoted part of the letter: "I would like to be present in spirit in any assembly to honor Mr. J. Reuben Clark Jr. As ambassador and undersecretary of state he had a distinguished career during my administration — but more than that, he is a wise statesman, a real religious leader."

The Tooele County Chamber of Commerce awarded President Clark its distinguished service plaque at the banquet.
