Living by the scriptures

Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him. Come and see.

— John 1:45-46.

In the summer of 1957 missionaries called on my wife and me bringing the message of the restored gospel. The sincerity of the messengers was obvious but that did not ensure the message was true. Thus we began an earnest investigation and also sought information about things Mormon from the local library.

The discussions were an uplifting experience. There was a feeling of peace and tranquility in our home as the elders met with us. They taught from the scriptures clearly, simply and by testimony. By contrast, library material regarding Mormon beliefs was clearly false when compared with what they taught us.

Looking back, we see how the Holy Spirit guided us. At the time we did not realize that was happening. All we knew was that we felt something calm and reassuring as we took the steps of learning to pray together as husband and wife.

I made two remarks to my wife after one of their early visits, which proved to be prophetic. One was, "These men haven't come all this way just to tell us something and then leave; they will expect us to join them." The other, "You mark my words, at some time or other we will be asked to part with money." We neither realized then that these truly were blessings to come.

Of the teaching moments that followed, one remains as an inspired use of the scriptures by a loving and dedicated missionary. Tongue in cheek, I had asked why the gospel was restored in America rather than say, Turkey or Iceland. In reply I was quietly asked to open my Bible and read John 1:45-46. The perfect answer. As a later mission president often said, "You can't argue with the scriptures." — John Harris, Cheltenham, England.
