Messages of inspiration from President Hinckley

A humbling experience

You can't look into the faces — light and dark, of many nationalities and many cultures and backgrounds — without having a tremendous emotional experience well up within you over what this work is accomplishing. It has made me feel very humble.

Serve one another: "We're all here to serve one another, to work together as part of a great family across the world building the kingdom of God on the earth."

Discipline in a spirit of love

Our doctrine is clear cut. It is clean. It is straightforward. We know what's good and what's bad, what's right and what's wrong. If people run seriously afoul of that doctrine, then we administer discipline, but we do it in a spirit of love. . . . We work constantly and consistently to bring those people back after they have been disciplined, to help them find happiness within the embrace of the Church.

— From Atlanta Journal-Constitution interview, June 23, 2000

Grateful for good people

We are grateful for good people wherever we find them, people with tremendous potential when they are given opportunity. We can only say we are happy to have them and do what we can to assist them.

— From National Press Club address, March 8, 2000

Not an armchair church

We expect great things of our people. We're not an armchair church. We're a roll-up-your-sleeves and go-to-work organization. People respond to that kind of a challenge. They're doing it and we hope that they will continue to do it; and we'll continue to work at it to see that it happens.

— From Fox 13 News interview, June 27, 2000

Persecution: a thing of the past

We have been persecuted a great deal during our history, terribly so. We have endured every kind of insult and difficulty. Fortunately, that has largely disappeared. . . . We will stand as we have stood through all of these years and move forward with a smile on our face and a greeting in our hearts for anyone who speaks against us or for us.

— From National Press Club, March 8, 2000

Prayers for the missionaries

Do you know that you are the most prayed for people on earth? You know that your fathers and your mothers are praying for you. You know that your brothers and your sisters are praying for you. . . . The whole Church prays for the missionaries in family prayer, in private prayer, in the prayers in meetinghouses. The plea goes up to heaven to remember and bless the missionaries. . . . If there ever comes a temptation to do something that you shouldn't do, just quietly stop and think of all the people throughout the world who are on their knees praying for you.

— From missionary meeting, Maracaibo, Venezuela, Aug. 3, 1999

Serve one another

Adulation is a poison that can destroy one. There is no place for arrogance or egotism or anything of that kind in this work. We're all here to serve one another, to work together as part of a great family across the world building the kingdom of God on the earth. We want to mingle together in a spirit of love and harmony.

Tithing — a great opportunity

This Church will invite you to contribute your tithes and offerings. . . . It is not an obligation, it is an opportunity, it is a law of God, it is the Lord's law of finance for His Church. We see it as a greater opportunity of contributing one-tenth of all that the Lord has blessed us with.

You never have to preach tithing to people who pay their tithing. They know that it is true. They have tasted of the blessings, and great and marvelous are those things. Tithing goes into the purse of the Lord and is spent with care and great caution to further the work in all the earth. . . . I think I've never seen a man go broke who paid his honest tithing in the right spirit. He is blessed of the Lord. The Lord is the Great Paymaster. He gives and He gives generously and wonderfully.

Women

You are so very important in the great plan of the Lord. God our Eternal Father loves you, His wonderful daughters. The Savior loves you. The women in His life were so very important. And we love you for the great good you do.
