For years, Gary Cook befriended a neighbor. Invitations to dinner were generally accepted, but anything that hinted of the Church were declined.
When the "Finding in Faith in Christ" DVD became available last April, Brother Cook gave the neighbor a copy as a gift.
"The next week," said Brother Cook, "he told me how much he enjoyed the video and how it motivated him to read the Bible."
A few weeks later, while working with the missionaries one evening, "I got up my nerve after several failed appointments and suggested we visit my neighbor.
"He let us in, and after some conversation, I suggested that he might want the missionaries to return and tell him of our beliefs in the Savior. To my surprise, he accepted."
An appointment was made which Brother Cook was not able to attend because of out-of-town business.
"When I returned, I asked him how the meeting with the missionaries went. 'Which meeting?' he asked. They were now on the fourth discussion.
"Then my neighbor asked me a question about the relation between 1st Nephi and 3rd Nephi. Bob, I said, you are reading the Book of Mormon. I assumed the missionaries had directed his reading to 3rd Nephi, but he assured me that he had read the whole book from the beginning.
" 'I just can't put the book down,' he said."
"In May," said Brother Cook, "I had the privilege of confirming him a member of the Church, and later ordaining him a priest. Today, as a member of the Union Park 3rd Ward, Midvale Utah Union Park Stake, he is an active member who attends meetings and holds a calling. He's looking forward to attending the temple to do the work for the thousand direct-line ancestors he's discovered.
"I'm his home teacher and have a renewed understanding that "from small and simple things, great things can come to pass," said Brother Cook.
