Dieter F. Uchtdorf biography

Family: Born Nov. 6, 1940, to Karl Albert and Hilde Else Opelt Uchtdorf in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia; married Harriet Reich, Dec. 14, 1962, in the Swiss Temple (now Bern Switzerland Temple); children Antje Evans and Guido, five grandchildren.

Church Service: Presidency of the Seventy, First Quorum of the Seventy, Second Quorum of the Seventy, stake president twice, stake mission president, high councilor, stake missionary, counselor in elders quorum presidency, and Young Men president.

Employment: Retired from Lufthansa German Airlines as senior vice president for flight operations and chief pilot in 1995. Also for Lufthansa, check and training captain for Boeing 747s, various management positions including head of airline pilot school, director of in-flight services, head of cockpit crews 1972-85. Airline captain beginning in 1970; was also chairman of the flight operations committee for the International Air Transport Association.

Military Service: Served in the German Air Force, 1959-65; received cadet training and pilot wings at Big Springs, Texas; fighter pilot training in Phoenix, Ariz.

Education: Attended Business Administration School in Bremen, Germany, and International Management Institute in Lausanne, Switzerland.
