Church leaders gathered with thousands of members in Guatemala City, Guatemala, Dec. 12, 1984, for the dedication of Central America's first temple, the Guatemala City Guatemala Temple.

President Gordon B. Hinckley, second counselor in the First Presidency, presided at the dedication. He spoke of the significance marked by this historic temple opening: "I am satisfied that Father Lehi smiles this day. He smiles after untold generations of his sons and daughters ... have been refined in the fires of terrible adversity. Now this generation, from whose eyes have fallen the scales of darkness, have grown in beauty to understand their capacity.

"This is as tremendous a development as the coming of morning after night; it is a miracle. The Lord is remembering His ancient covenant, and what a wonderful feeling that is."

Elder Boyd K. Packer of the Quorum of the Twelve added this observation:

"How grateful I feel today ... oh, if only you could understand what it means to Central America to a have a temple here."
