During his keynote address at Brigham Young University’s Campus Education Week in August of 2014, Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles invited Church members everywhere to “fill the earth with goodness.”
“I exhort you to sweep the earth with messages filled with righteousness and truth — messages that are authentic, edifying and praiseworthy — and literally to sweep the earth with a flood,” he said.
Recognizing the “unique season in the history of the world,” Elder Bednar encouraged individuals to use “the inspired technological and communication innovations” appropriately, especially for the work of salvation.
Church members of all ages living throughout the world have responded to the call of an apostle. Through social media, many have participated by posting messages of faith, pictures that promote peace and uplifting videos that “share goodness” with the world.
A quick search on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or YouTube — among other social media sites — of the hashtag #sharegoodness quickly produces thousands of inspiring results. Whether it is a quote from a general conference talk, a scripture, a picture of a temple, or a personal experience, all are meant to help “fill the earth with goodness.”
Many youth of the Church share some of their thoughts on the Church’s youth page.
Rebecca S., from the United States, said, “Just because you are on the Internet, does not mean you can be someone totally different than you are at school, church, etc. Don’t be afraid to be who you are on the internet. Help others. Be a disciple of Christ.”
Nia Jayce Cajucum U., from the Philippines, said, “My teacher in Institute challenged us to post at least once a week a gospel phrase or whatever ‘goodness’ in our social media accounts. I made this a goal and I testify that this really helped me prove to my family, relatives and most specially to my friends who are not members of the Church to know what my principles and standards in life. This helped me to gain their respect and I testify to you that our friendship gets stronger.”
Jaron Andrew Z., from the United States, said, “I love to share goodness with those around me because of the good feeling I get! Anyone can share goodness, anywhere, anytime, and no technology required! The examples we set are all in the way we live, ‘in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity’ 1 Tim. 4:12. #sharegoodness.”
